Article 6 of the Paris Agreement (PA) underpins the growing interest of parties to cooperate with one another in implementing their climate action and hence their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The different ways of cooperation through cooperative approaches (Article 6.2) and the mechanism for mitigation and sustainable development (Article 6.4) have the potential to promote a global approach to the challenge of climate change. Predictions indicate that international carbon markets could reduce the cost of delivering the mitigation represented in NDCs by around 33% by 2030 and 50% by 2050.

However, COP25 did not deliver the anticipated missing piece to the Paris regime ‘rule book’ defining the modalities of the market-based aspects of Article 6. In the absence of guiding rules on Article 6, pilot and readiness activities become paramount for developing an attractive and credible international post CDM-2020 carbon market that includes participation of the African continent.

Through this event the Alliances and their member countries wish to share experiences and lessons learned through participating in Article 6 pilot activities, particularly in terms of opportunities and challenges. The event will also focus on the perspective of host countries, reflecting, inter alia, on the regulatory requirements for host countries, the role of the private sector and the engagement in Article 6 tenders.
